Josh, I just read some of your stuff, you seem to be pretty level-headed. I am new to Christianity. I believe in God but do not have a strong understanding of the Bible. I am a 50 year old white male. I have become involved in my Episcopal Church(senior warden) would you recommend a Bible study that would help me to understand the Bible in context to real life.

Hi Andrew,

If you are asking if I believe that only people who believe in the Oneness Pentecostal interpretation of Acts 2:38 are going to heaven, then my answer is definitely "no." In other words, I do not think that a person has to be baptized in the Name of Jesus. That's certainly a valid mode of baptism, but so is being baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

As far as your question about divorce goes, I honestly do not feel qualified to answer that. I think that the answer to that question depends very heavily on the circumstances surrounding the divorce. I think that is something that a saint should discuss with their pastor (assuming their pastor is qualified) or read some books written by Christian counselors about the subject, because there is no "one size fits all" answer :).

Speaking of divorce in general, though, I believe that Jesus made it clear that if a person divorces because of their spouse committing adultery then they are free to remarry. I once dated a woman who was divorced; her husband had cheated on her on multiple occasions and she finally left him. Our relationship did not work out, but I feel confident that if we had gotten married then neither one of us would be in sin.

Beyond that, I encourage you to prayerfully study the Scriptures and consult godly authors and/or your pastor.

In Christ,
~ Josh
